Would you use the following words to describe yourself: adventurous, curious, daring, up-for-anything? When facing obstacles, do your friends turn to you and say, “you first”? Are you the type to boldly venture forth, excited for the stories after? Well, Belize holds so many exciting challenges for you! Whether you seek a pleasant amble, just the thrill of discovery, or plan to brave a steep trail or two to dance under a waterfall, the experiences below will add to the chapters you’ll tell of your time in Belize.
Sleeping Giant Lodge Trails
The expansive property at Sleeping Giant Lodge offers a variety of onsite trails to enjoy. One of the most popular hikes is the Gazebo Hike, which takes you up to a gazebo that provides a panoramic view of the property and beyond. A moderate hike, this trail takes about 25 minutes for avid hikers and comes complete with ropes, cement steps and well-marked walking paths. The vistas once at the top are well worth the climb, especially as you can take in the sight of the resort’s namesake – the Sleeping Giant himself.

Other scenic spots to wander through include four rope bridges. These bridges cross you over the river and into the jungle in the Maya Mountains. Of special note, however, are some fantastic art sculptures hidden throughout. Stunning pieces were created through the resort’s Artist in Residence program, which had its debut in 2023. The sculptures: Las Tres Marias by Lucia Meyers, and Qawa Ki’ché by Marcelo Patiño and Gabriella Giusti, were placed in their location by the artists themselves. As you wander through the area, seek out these pieces and learn a bit more about their design and name via the nearby signage.
Simply follow signs and when in doubt, ask one of the friendly staff for guidance!

Billy Barquedier Hike
Take a drive down the Hummingbird Highway, and you’ll see the “Billy Barquedier National Park” sign at Mile 17.
A moderately challenging hike, plan for around 3 to 4 hours. You know the pace you generally go at, but bearing in mind that the trail offers a multitude of views, you may slow down and explore along the way. A well-marked trail, the Billy Barquedier can still be a bit slick after rain, with a steep terrain in some sections and uneven ground. As such, prepare for some agility lessons and a test of fitness!
