On March 1, 2025, The Belize Collection hosted Women Leading the Wild at The Banks, an inspiring roundtable talk that honored both World Wildlife Day and International Women’s Day. This gathering served as a platform for women at the forefront of conservation and sustainability to share their insights, experiences, and expertise in protecting Belize’s natural heritage.
As part of The Belize Collection, a company committed to fostering gender equality, the event underscored the organization’s dedication to uplifting women. In fact, 50% of management positions within The Belize Collection are filled by women, demonstrating its ongoing investment in female leadership and success.
The event featured an engaging roundtable discussion with four women from diverse backgrounds dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable practices. The panel included:
• Nicole Auil Gomez – Country Director at the Wildlife Conservation Society
• Dr. Marisa Tellez – Founder of the Crocodile Research Coalition
• Khadija Assales – Owner of KAJ Expressions
• Roxana Lemus – Lead Zookeeper at The Belize Zoo
Throughout the discussion, the speakers highlighted the role of women in conservation, the unique challenges they face in the field, and the importance of integrating sustainable practices into daily life. They shared personal stories, professional insights, and actionable advice for individuals looking to make a positive impact on the environment.

“Women are natural leaders and nurturers and community builders… women often focus on long-term solutions and sustainability… A lot of the women I work around are mothers and I think that, from what I’ve heard, and me too, I value creating a future for my children that’s sustainable… all of these efforts in conservation ensure a bright future for our children.” – Khadija Assales
Halfway through the conversation, a flock of scarlet macaws flew over the Sibun River next to Humo where the event was being held, almost as if they were offering their approval. Their brilliant red, blue, and yellow plumage was a breathtaking sight, prompting attendees to pause and admire the rare spectacle. This spontaneous moment of connection with wildlife was a perfect reminder of why conservation efforts are so vital. Surrounded by the Belizean rainforest, The Banks offers an unparalleled setting for immersive experiences in nature. With its calming riverfront views, the resort serves as a gateway to exploring Belize’s rich ecosystems.

The event also included a pop-up shop featuring women vendors whose businesses embody sustainability. Women-owned brands such as Ikooma, Belize Banana Fibers, and Farmed to Perfection showcased their eco-friendly products, reinforcing the message of responsible consumerism and environmental stewardship.
Women Leading the Wild was more than just a discussion—it was a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the powerful role women play in shaping a more sustainable future. By bringing together passionate voices and conscious businesses, The Belize Collection continues to champion meaningful conversations and impactful initiatives for conservation and beyond.
