Belize Bird Rescue
Belize Bird Rescue
Belize Bird Rescue, founded by Nikki Buxton in 2004, began with the arrival of two featherless baby parrots, which introduced her to the illegal wildlife trade. Over the years, the organization has evolved into Belize’s only multi-species avian rescue center, addressing avian wildlife poaching and conflict while respecting cultural practices. The center works with all species of resident and migratory birds in Belize. It is located on a privately owned 50-acre riverfront reserve, which serves as both a rehabilitation center and wildlife sanctuary. Belize Bird Rescue thrives on the support of donors, sponsors, and visiting professionals who bring expertise in avian medicine, rehabilitation, and behavior.
Belize Bird Rescue’s core need is food – usually pellets and seeds. Travelers are allowed to enter the country with human-grade nuts and seeds such as peanuts, almonds, pistachios, shelled sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds – all unsalted and dry-roasted or raw.
Needs:
- Raw Whole Pistachios – shelled and unsalted (Milo, our Moluccan cockatoo especially loves these!)
- Dry Roasted Unsalted Peanuts – this link is for a 5 Pound Bulk Bag, but we are grateful for any amount as long as they are dry roasted and unsalted (not raw). They are evening treats for the non-releasable and compromised birds.
- Raw Shelled Pumpkin Seeds – this link is for a 3 lb bag but any amount and any variety would be wonderful. Raw is best, provided they are salted.
- Raw Sunflower Seed Kernels 5lbs Unsalted – raw is best for the birds and any amount would be fabulous, as long as they are not salted in any way.
